With Clifford Ready-to-Read children practice rhyming, identifying letters and matching letters to the sounds they make—skills that are related to, and may even help predict, a child’s later success with reading and writing. At higher levels children do word-building activities and benefit from recognizing how some words such as dig, pig and wig share common spelling patterns. As children begin to notice these patterns, they can more easily predict how to read or spell new words that they encounter, such as fig or rig.

Young preschoolers (age 3+) engage differently than their older counterparts, so LeapFrog develops content experiences to meet their specific learning needs. Clifford Ready-to-Read features simple gameplay designed to promote engagement with young audiences, including one-step directions, voiceovers and icons that light up to enable pre-readers to learn and play independently. For example, children are prompted to build letters out of shapes, which develops early letter recognition and letter formation skills. They also take photos of rhyming objects, since research shows that children who are better at identifying rhymes and individual sounds in words often learn to read more quickly. This is because, as children recognize that rhyming words have the same ending sounds, they begin to notice that many rhyming words also share spelling patterns, which can help children learn how to read and spell.
